Post-Barc Blog

Just wrote this for the WCCC blog. Thought I'd post it on my blog as well.

:)

As I'm sitting here writing this blog, it's officially 5 days after we have returned back to our homes in Iowa. I've had 5 days to soak in all that God did during our week in Spain and yet it seems like I have just scratched the surface.
Our Mission Barcelona group saw 28 salvations throughout the week. That within itself amazes me, as it is a sign that people's hearts are softening towards God's truths in Spain. There were 3 of us from Walnut Creek Community Church's sister church here in Ames, that teamed up with the group going to Barcelona. I knew some people going on the trip, but most of them I had minimal if any aquaintance with. One thing I got to experience first-hand was the love and unity that everyone had with one another. As sort of an outsider myself (at the beginning), it was so obvious to me that this group of people were completely committed to one another and their love for each other was not a kind of love you can find in this world. People were ATTRACTED to this love we had for each other. The world is always yearning for love- people search for it in all shapes and sizes and yet the ironic thing is that love comes from God and not from this world. The people we reached in Barcelona got to see this love and got to see it firsthand. I think God really blessed our love and our willingness to just open our mouths and be willing to be used for His glory.

One of the biggest lessons God taught me during the week was that I can't put restrictions on who I talk to. For me, I know that before going on this trip, I thought it was disrespectful for me to go up to someone who was my grandparents' age or even my parents' ages and tell them about the love of Jesus Christ. I sort of felt like, "Well who am I to tell someone twice or triple my age what truth is? They probably won't want to hear it from me anyways!" God knew I had that doubt, and this is what he did to shatter it. Monday night my group (the Power Rangers) were riding the subway back to our hostel. An older man (probably in his 80's) sat down next to me. He was holding a violin case. I know some Spanish, but one of the more difficult things for me in Spain was just knowing how to start a conversation with someone. God dropped this one in my lap. I asked him how long he had been playing violin and proceeded to tell him that I play the clarinet and sing and am studying music at Iowa State University. We talked about music things for a while longer, then I told him why were we in Barcelona. Shortly after, he had to get off, so I handed him a Spanish track and an invitation to a church service we were having Wednesday night. Not expecting to see him again, I said goodbye.

Wednesday night came around and sure enough, there was Benito, walking up the hill to our hostel! He had the track and invitation I had given him in his hand. As soon as I saw him, I was amazed. He was the oldest person there by probably 50 years and yet it didn't seem to phase him at all. Laura, a sister from the church in Madrid, helped me translate some questions with him. Benito had a strong Catholic background, so when I asked him how sure he was he was going to heaven, he said he wasn't sure because it depended on how many bad things he had done. I proceeded to explain to him that the Bible says multiple different times how you can be 100% sure you're going to heaven. Then we asked him if he wanted to pray with us right then and there to accept Jesus Christ into his heart and he said yes. Praise the Lord! After praying, I told him that even though we were going back to America on Friday, I would see him again someday in heaven. :) When we went into the church service, I asked him where he wanted to sit and low and behold, he pointed to the front row. Benito didn't speak any English at all and even though he didn't know what we were singing about during the worship time, he sang along without words. He had a wonderful time singing and listening to the testimonies that were shared during the time. As we walked him out afterwards, Laura asked him what he thought of the service. He responded, "Muy bien! Muy bien! Muy bien! Muy bien!" (In English, "Very good!" x4)

Benito, though much older than myself, had his heart softened and ready to hear from God. Anyone, at any age, can be in the same boat. The gospel has no restrictions on age, gender, religion, ethnicity. The gospel is for all mankind- no restrictions. Benito is a living example of that for me. :)

"But how are they to call on Him in whome they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whome they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!""- Romans 10:14-15

Spain Meditations

I put pics up on facebook and on my Picasa web album

These are my verses and promises I claimed for my trip to Barcelona. God came through on all of them. :)

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight." -Prov 3:5-6

A.K.A. Don't trust in your Spanish skills or lack thereof. Just trust that God will bless your efforts and will provide grace with communication.

"My people shall be satisfied with my goodness, declares the Lord." -2nd half Jeremiah 31:14

I came back satisfied with the goodness of the Lord. :)

-Don' ever rule someone out b/c they are too old or too young to hear the truth. God can use any of his children to tell anyone else about His good news.

Benito is a living example of this:

"The Lord replied, "Look around at the nations and be amazed! For I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn't believe even if someone told you about it." -Habakkuk 1:5

I can pretty confidently say that everyone's expectations were blown away by the fruit of this week in Barcelona. He certainly IS doing something in our own day!

*This was the verse on a card my dear friend Daphne gave me one of the last days we were in Barcelona. It was a comfort and encouragement, as I had been struggling with a lot of hand pain and humility:
"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." -Romans 8:18

A few other verses I clung to (and still am):
"Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray." -James 5:13

"Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at PEACE." -2 Peter 3:14

I asked God that I'd be able to see His glory on this trip. Check yet again...!:)

"And the Lord said to Moses, "I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name." Then Moses said,"Not show me your glory." And the Lord said, "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence." -Exodus 33:17-19

Steele Croswhite's song "Your Love Remains" has been echoing through my mind a lot since being back. His love remained in Barcelona, it remains here through my hand trial, it will remain 25 years from now. How easy it is for us to lose sight of that simple truth. His love remains.

When I don't feel it/ When I don't give it

When I don't want it...your love remains

When I don't see it/ When I am sinful

When I am winning...your love remains

When I am waking/ When I am working

When I am resting...your love remains

When I am doubting/ When I am fighting

As I do worry...your love remains

When I am tired/ When I am broken

When I am resistant...your love remains

When I am lonely/ Or when I'm surrounded

When I am uncertain...your love remains

When I am tempted/ When I am mourning

When I am waiting...your love remains

When I am restless/ When I am indifferent

When I am unfocused...your love remains

When you renewed me/ When you restored me

When you redeem me...your love remains

When you come claim me/ When this life is over

In your arms forever...I will remain

Barcelona 2009 will forever hold a special place in my heart. What a week of growth, trials, amazing relationships and witness to God's goodness. DSM and Madrid brothers and sisters, I can't wait til we can all reunite once again someday in heaven. It's going to be a fiesta, that's for sure!!!!! :)

Back in the U.S.!!

Hello everyone!!!

Barcelona was an amazing week for me! Our group that went there saw 28 salvations. Peole's hearts were open to the love of Jesus Christ and God really used our unity as a group as well to show others that we had a love not of this world. There were SO many amazing stories- I'll post some of them later! :)

I messed up my hand last Wednesday and had it in a sling for the past 4 days. It was a slight discouragement, because I was down a hand for half the trip, it being my right (strong) hand. I got back to Ames this morning at around 3:30 and got 4 hours of sleep before going to the doctor at 8:30.

After multiple x-rays and tests, she diagnosed me with severe tendonitis in my right hand. Right now I have a hand brace, sling and lots of sterrhoids. A prayer request would be that it would heal QUICKLY, as I'm soloing with the ISU orchestera a week from today, with a dress rehearsal on Tuesday. At this point, I can barely move my fingers, so I'm going to need a lot of healing in order to be able to perform!

I will update again soon about Barcelona-- there is MUCH to say! Pics coming soon too! Lets just say I ove Spain, Jesus, and all my brothers and sisters from DSM! I have a love and respect for you guys that deepened so much this past week! :)

First Group Blog

This is our first group blog- it will be posted on the Walnut Creek CC website as well.

God has been doing some crazy awesome things so far in Barcelona. We all made it here safe- complete with all the luggage coming through as well!! :) Our hostel has been a perfect location for outreach and night and in the morning when we are here. Each day new people come in from all over the world and give us the opportunity to love them, share the gospel and let them see our love for each other. There have been fifteen salvations so far- Praise The Lord!

For our group in particular (the Power Rangers), God has been providing many English-speakers for us to share with. Jason is the only one who speaks fairly fluent Spanish, so the rest of the group has been very thankful for opportunities to share with several English-speakers. We have been going to the same location to share everyday- the University of Barcelona. People are willing to listen to what we have to say.

Last night our group had a great opportunity to share with multiple people at one time. Shimpei, Heather Guck and I (Sarah) were talking to student from the University of Barcelona named Tomas and his friend Ines. Their background was Catholic, but they were interested in hearing what we believe. We asked Jason to come over after about 20 minutes to help translate some things. We ended up all going with them to a cafe where they were meeting their friends to hang out. Jason proceeded to share the gospel and several Bible verses with them, that contradicted some of their traditional Catholic beliefs. We were in the cafe with six of their friends and it was great to be able to build relationships and share the gospel. We hope to be able to meet up with them again before we leave.

There were twelve people from our sister church in Madrid that were here for two days to share with us and help translate. It was a blessing to meet them and get to labor along side them. Laura and Clarise are still with us for the rest of the week, and I know everyone on this trip considers them a huge blessing to our time here in Barcelona.

We will update again soon, as much is happening.

Love from Barcelona!

Random Happening of my Monday

Today I ran into the beast/prince. Ya know, the one from Beauty and the Beast, at the end when the beast turns into Mr. Prince? I literally ran into him, as we were both turning opposite corners of a building.

He had it all: long flowing blonde hair, piercing eyes, pointed jaw.

If Mr. Beauty and the Beast Prince dude was human, this guy would have been him.

It was crazy.

Anyways, just thought I'd share.

Happy Monday!

Love It!

So I can't remember EVER laughing in a movie as much as I did when I saw "Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa". This movie gave me stomach cramps from laughing so hard. O man.

Ok, so I'm a girl. Being a girl, I totally loved this clip of the movie. Melman (the giraffe), after being in love with Gloria (the hippo) for a VERY long time, it finally comes out. Love has no boundaries! :)

HAVE YOU FELT THE HURT OF THE LORD?

I feel like God has been personalizing my "Utmost for His Highest" readings for me this ENTIRE YEAR so far. It's amazing. It's like every night, the devotional is exactly what I need to hear when I need to hear it. Don't you just love it when that happens? This devotional has been like that experience on red bull. Crazy awesome. This one rocked my boat a few days ago.

"Jesus said unto him the third time, Lovest thou Me?" John 21:17

Have you felt the hurt of the Lord to the uncovered quick, the place where the real sensitiveness of your life is lodged? The devil never hurts there, neither sin nor human affection hurts there, nothing goes through to that place but the word of God. "Peter was grieved because Jesus said unto him the third time. . . ." He was awakening to the fact that in the real true centre of his personal life he was devoted to Jesus, and he began to see what the patient questioning meant. There was not the slightest strand of delusion left in Peter's mind, he never could be deluded again. There was no room for passionate utterance, no room for exhilaration or sentiment. It was a revelation to him to realize how much he did love the Lord, and with amazement he said - "Lord, Thou knowest all things." Peter began to see how much he did love Jesus; but he did not say - "Look at this or that to confirm it." Peter was beginning to discover to himself how much he did love the Lord, that there was no one in heaven above or upon earth beneath beside Jesus Christ; but he did not know it until the probing, hurting questions of the Lord came. The Lord's questions always reveal me to myself.

The patient directness and skill of Jesus Christ with Peter! Our Lord never asks questions until the right time. Rarely, but probably once, He will get us into a corner where He will hurt us with His undeviating questions, and we will realize that we do love Him far more deeply than any profession can ever show.

New PostSecret

I've decided to start posting my favorite "PostSecret" of the week. I usually put about one up a week anyways, so it shouldn't be a big change of any kind.

This week we have a dentist office confession (which I must admit I've been guilty of myself...!)
